The Prime Rib has been known to DC insiders as the home of the power lunch for more than two decades. There, lawmakers, business tycoons, and other high-rollers work on the deals that shape America.
 
It's a sight that would surprise most everyday Americans. No, it wouldn't be the décor, or the clientele, or the jacket-and-tie requirement that would supply the shock; it would be the menu, which boasts a $25 hamburger.
 
That's a lot more than a patty of ground beef runs at the local grocery store, but when you think about it, is the beef really overpriced?

Finding your way on the Farm

Global Positioning Systems (GPS) are marvelously useful for drivers who need to navigate new cities, find the fastest route to their destinations, or simply have no sense of direction. But for farmers, GPS systems are allowing them to do something even better—be kinder to the planet all while saving money and increasing crop yields.
 
Over the past several years, the use of GPS systems in machinery operation and farm management has exploded, and today most fertilizer and chemical dealers offer GPS-guided application equipment. What's the draw? Farmers using this technology can map their fields and apply crop inputs faster and more accurately, reducing operator stress while increasing efficiency.

Agriculture Committee has achieved balance in funding

Dear Editor:
 
Amidst America's bulging deficit, one policy has excelled while coming in under budget: agriculture.
 
Considering farm policy has saved taxpayers $30 billion since 2002 and was already trimmed by another $7.4 billion in the 2008 farm bill, I was surprised at the Chronicle's March 25 article attacking agriculture ("School lunch boosts mean painful cuts").
 
The fact is that farm policy and crop insurance have sustained repeated cuts and represent just 0.17 percent of federal spending—far less than nutrition, which received another $10 billion bump in funding in 2008.
